The megacity Rises to Toxic Smog Post Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" level.

Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to ten times the recommended threshold established by the World Health Organization.

Cross-Border Consequences
The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming declining air quality in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.
Chronic Environmental Problem
The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the most severe records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Contamination Sources
This crisis in the city is attributed to a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating toxic smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the Delhi area is significant, according to various studies.
This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature mortalities each year in Delhi.
