The Former President's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
