A extended journey around Australia has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an older woman who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant island.

Suzanne Rees had been trekking on the tropical location with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the excursion for a break. The liner departed without her and came back later that day after the personnel realised the woman was unaccounted for.

A large-scale rescue mission located her body the following day.

Officials are investigating the incident, alongside investigators and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company stated that travelers and staff on the ship were told that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "tragic passing and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he added that guests would be given a total repayment, and said the company was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Commander" preventing any additional guests from entering the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its return.

Sequence of Events

The liner originally sailed from the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the moment of the 80-year-old's demise. The tropical location was the opening port on the voyage.

Passengers on the vessel - who generally pay substantial amounts of currency to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a shore visit with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.

Family Statement

The child of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and saddened that the liner left the island after an organised outing without my parent".

In her statement, she portrayed her mum as an "vigorous elderly person" who was a participant of a walking club.

"Based on limited information we have been provided, it looks that there was a failure of care and basic judgment," she stated.

She added that she hoped the inquiry would be able to identify what "the operator should have undertaken that might have saved Mother's life".

"According to reports from the police that it was a extremely warm day, and she took sick on the mountain ascent," she revealed.

"Officials suggested her to return, alone. Then the ship departed, seemingly without doing a passenger count.

"During some point in that sequence, or shortly after, mother died, without company."

Operator Response

In a statement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with authorities to aid their investigation".

He stated that the firm was "very regretful that this has happened" and had provided its full support to the relatives.

The vessel accommodates up to one hundred twenty travelers with nearly fifty personnel, according to company information. It was purpose-built to reach distant areas of the Australian shoreline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - compact vessels used to transport individuals on shore trips.

Events of this nature are rare, and passenger vessels have systems to document which individuals are boarding or getting off, according to maritime specialists.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship really isn't an option," an authority remarked.

Shipping companies regard these methods very seriously and have "clever tech in place to stop such incidents from taking place," the expert further stated.

"This seems to be most likely a surprising - and sad - isolated incident."
