New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
