Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
